NEIGHBORHOOD
INFO
MILTON
Milton is
the county seat of Santa Rosa County, located near the center
of the county, next to the Blackwater River. The City of Milton
was incorporated in 1844 making it one of oldest cities in Florida.
The Blackwater River served as the main transportation artery
for its timber, lumber, brick, naval stores and ship building
industries. Today, Milton has a strong manufacturing base and
is the home of the Navy’s Whiting Field, which is located
north of town. This installation hosts fixed wing primary training
squadrons and a helicopter training squadron. Among the recreational
facilities in the Milton area is the Blackwater Heritage State
Trail, the site of an abandoned railroad, formerly the Florida
and Alabama Railroad. It is an easy route between the town of
Milton and the Whiting Field Naval Air Station. The trail was
acquired from the National Park Service in 1993 and will be part
of a link with the proposed Old Spanish Trail. Hikers and bikers
use the paved route while horseback riders use the parallel dirt
path. It travels approximately 8 miles bypassing open field and
wetlands where white-tailed deer roam and wading birds stand statuesque.
